Kava (piper methysticum) is a shrub endemic to the South Pacific. Traditionally, the root is ground into a powder and mixed to form a lukewarm tea. Kava has been celebrated for 3,000 years for its special properties, and continues to occupy a special role in Polynesian/Micronesian culture.
We use 100% noble kava root, sourced directly from Vanuatu, the Kava capital of the world. This distinction is essential as lower-quality, untested Kava has been associated with headaches and liver issues. We’ve done our research and care about our supply chain, and only use the highest-quality, natural ingredients.
Our slogan is “calm in a can” and we have engineered our product to deliver this promise. Clinical studies have shown that 250 mg-280 mg of kavalactones are effective at reducing anxiety. Because of this, our customers can reliably expect to feel relaxed when they drink a can. However, it is important to note that everyone will respond differently to Leilo based on weight, metabolism, and more. In comparison to alcohol, Leilo is more like a beer than a cocktail in terms of potency. For comparison, CBD is effective at reducing anxiety at 300 mgs. Most CBD drinks on the market only contain 10mgs of CBD. You’d need to consume 30 in one sitting to feel the desired effects.
Botava is the distributor for the State of Colorado. Additional retailers and wholesalers can be found on the Leilo website here.
Technically, no. Leilo is considered a dietary supplement, as opposed to a beverage (as in 'food & beverage'), and is therefore at less risk of over-regulation by government agencies. Retailers should avoid using language that relates to beverages and drinks, such as ‘refresh’, ‘hydrate’, ‘delicious’, among others.
A 2002 study in Switzerland and Germany found 20 cases of liver damage associated with kava use, but later found to be caused by mixing kava with alcohol and prescription drugs. Kava faced a setback in the West from 2002-2015 due to the FDA consumer warning. In 2016, the WHO cleared kava's name, except in Poland, as it was proven to be safe and effective as an anxiolytic, compared to alcohol. With the rise of kava bars in the US and increased exports to the West, kava's popularity has grown.
Kava has historically been used as an effective natural anxiolytic. Besides reducing anxiety, many people use Kava as a pain reliever, muscle relaxant, anti-depressant, anti-insomniac, and cognitive booster. People use Kava to promote relaxation and better sleep.
The active chemical ingredient in kava is kavalactones. Therefore, “kava dosage” is less important than kavalactone dosage. We use high grade 30% kavalactone extract. Each can of Leilo has 834 mgs of kava extract, with 250 mgs of kavalactones in each can.
The five flavors of Leilo available are:
Leilo is made in America, at one of our co-packers in NY, WI, NV. Each facility is GMP and CFR-111 compliant. COAs are available on all raw ingredients, batching records are all filed and retained, with consistent microbial testing used to confirm quality.
Compared to alcohol, kava is a much safer means to unwind. Per the NCBI, the liver damage rate of kava is less than 1 per 1 million doses. This is compared to a 10-15% liver cirrhosis development for alcohol consumers, per NIH. Leilo is non-addictive, does not show up on drug tests (perfect for NCAA athletes and intelligence officers), cannot result in an overdose, and does not result in hangovers. Relax responsibly.
Leilo has been carefully crafted to meet all relevant FDA compliance requirements, including our labelling. No laws prevent the sale of kava, and there is no need for a liquor license. While there is technically no legal age limit, we recommend 18+ for liability. Stores nationwide are legally permitted to carry Leilo.
